Abstract.
  • 1 The larvae of the multivoltine imported willow leaf beetle, Plagiodera versicolora (Laicharting), are found in larval aggregations during the first half of the larval stage. An experimental study was conducted to test for seasonal (brood) and group size effects on larval fitness. For each of the three broods, egg group sizes of 1, 4, 8, 16 , 24 and 32 were established in the field and monitored for the first 6 days post-hatching.
  • 2 There was no effect of group size on larval weight, but there was a significant effect of group size on survival. Individuals from group size 16 had the highest survival, which coincides with the mean natural cluster size of 15.3 eggs.
  • 3 There were no significant interactions between brood and group size.
  • 4 The effect of larval weight on adult fitness was determined in the laboratory and the field. Larval weight was correlated with egg production in the laboratory but not in the field.

The breeding season was 157, 154, <126, 210 and 217 days for Rambouillet, Columbia, Suffolk, Rambouillet x Finnish Landrace and Columbia x Finnish Landrace ewes respectively. Treatment of cyclic ewes with pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG) (500 IU), following a 12-day treatment with progestin-containing intravaginal sponges, did not affect fertility, but did decrease the time from sponge removal to estrus, (control 48.0 +/- 3.1 hr; PMSG 39.4 +/- 1.8 hr) to the preovulatory surge of LH (control 52.7 +/- 2.8 hr; PMSG 39.0 +/- 1.7 hr) and FSH (control 52.3 +/- 2.9 hr; PMSG 42.8 +/- 1.6 hr) and caused an elevation of serum LH levels prior to the preovulatory surge (control 1.25 +/- 0.18 ng/ml; PMSG 2.31 +/- 0.22 ng/ml). Exposure of the purebred ewes to 18 hours of daylight in January, decreasing by 30 minutes a week subsequently, counteracted the seasonal reduction in the number of ewes lambing following induced breeding under natural daylight in May. Prolificacy was greatest in crossbred ewes and their fertility was not affected by season. Gestation period was longer for fall-bred ewes and varied with breed.  相似文献

The frequencies and types of adult male aggressive behavior of confined Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata)and free-ranging olive baboons (Papio anubis)were compared. The baboons, which do not have a mating season, were more aggressive to conspecific males than were the macaques during their nonmating season. The baboons also solicited aid during aggressive encounters more frequently than the macaques. However, during their mating season, the macaques were more aggressive to conspecific females than were the baboons. The macaques were also involved in more triadic sequences of aggression, and the frequency of occurrence of these patterns supported Chase’s theory of dominance hierarchy formation and maintenance. The differences in aggressive behavior appeared to be related to the seasonal reproductive cycle of the macaques.  相似文献

Summary Most soybean varieties fail to nodulate effectively in tropical soils unless inoculated with a competitive strain ofRhizobium japonicum. Developing countries in the tropics, with few exceptions, lack inoculant industries to produce and distribute viable inoculants to small farmers and extension programs to teach them to use inoculant. Several soybean genotypes have been identified that nodulate effectively with many strains of the cowpea inoculation group which is ubiquitous in tropical soils of Africa. Soybean genotypes that nodulate and grow well without inoculant application are called promiscuous. Summary Dry-matter accumulation, and concentration and uptake of nitrogen increased with increasing level of nitrogen at all the stages of crop growth. The differences in nitrogen concentration due to nitrogen levels were greatest at panicle initiation stage and started becoming narrower with the advancement in crop age. Split application of nitrogen with its heavier fractions at tillering and panicle initiation stages either through soil alone or soil+foliage (1/3+1/3+1/3) resulted in higher dry-matter accumulation, and higher nitrogen concentration and uptake than other methods. The crop, on an average, removed 61 kg N/ha. Plants accumulated nearly 15% of the total absorbed nitrogen, up to tillering, 50% up to panicle initiation and 85–90% up to heading. Proportionately lesser nitrogen uptake and dry-matter accumulation at post-heading stage is an indicative of a major constraint for production efficiency of rainfed-upland rice culture.  相似文献

Synopsis The behaviour of free-living pairs ofAequidens vittatus was observed in Surinam, South America. An ethogram of breeding behaviour is presented, based on those observations and on aquarium-held fish. This is a biparental, substrate-guarding species that spawns on a movable platform. Sexual differentiation of parental roles was more pronounced when the young were in the embryonic interval than when they were mobile juveniles. Females spent more time near their brood, attacked juvenile conspecifics more often, and fanned and mouthed embryos more than males did. Males were more involved than females in territorial spacing of pairs. The movable spawning leaf provides support for eggs on detritus substrate and may also provide protection against predators and rapid water level changes.  相似文献

Synopsis The spawning and nesting behavior ofEtheostoma (Boleosoma) perlongum was investigated in the field and laboratory. Sexual dimorphism is highly developed in such features as genital papillae, first dorsal and paired fins, and nuptial coloration. A reproductive migration from mid-lake to shore occurs in the spring: males precede females to select nest sites under submerged sticks and other debris. The male excavates a depression beneath the submerged object. Gonad analysis indicates a single spawning season extending from March through June. Nests were found from late April to mid-June and were guarded by a single male for periods of 13 to 36 days. Males initiate courtship by lateral display, lead the female to the nest site and show the nest by inverting. The female responds by tail up, tail wag and circle; males also tail wag and circle. Spawning pairs invert, usually in unison, and orient head to head or, less often, head to tail. The female deposits eggs while holding her body in a weak S or J shape with the caudal peduncle held away from the spawning substrate while vibrating.  相似文献

Summary The Genetic Evaluation and Utilization (GEU) program of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) is an interdisciplinary program for the improvement of rice crops. Scientists trained in diverse disciplines such as plant breeding, plant pathology, entomology, agronomy, cereal chemistry, plant physiology, and soil chemistry work together and contribute their specialized skills to this joint endeavor. The program has five interrelated components: (1) germ plasm collection and conservation, (2) research in disciplinary areas, (3) development of improved germ plasm, (4) distribution, evaluation and exchange of germ plasm internationally, (5) training of young scientists.Over forty thousand rice varieties from different countries are being maintained in the IRRI germ plasm bank. These varieties have been screened for grain quality, resistance to various diseases and insects, and tolerance to various environmental stresses such as drought, high and low temperatures and problem soils. Donor parents for resistances to each of the problem areas have been identified. These parents were utilized for developing improved germ plasm. Varieties with resistance to as many as five diseases and five insect species have been developed. These multiple resistant varieties are grown on millions of hectares of rice land. Seeds of improved breeding materials are exchanged internationally and 194 scientists from different countries have been trained in rice improvement work.  相似文献

Summary Explicit methods are derived for estimating steady-state genetic responses and genetic differences between nucleus and base progeny crops in open nucleus breeding schemes which utilize genetic differences between progeny groups with parents of different ages or between age groups. Explicit methods are also given for estimating proportions which should be selected from the different nucleus and base selection groups so as to maximise genetic responses under each of a range of selection methods. Some basic differences between selection programmes utilizing genetic differences between progeny groups with parents of different ages and those utilizing genetic differences between age groups in nucleus breeding schemes are summarized.  相似文献
